JOHN MACKAYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFnW4iU2r2E . This is a YouTube video that explains how a steam catapult works. At the 2:08 and2:44 time spots are scenes that show aircraft being launched. I would think that a steam FX would have two parts. The first part would be the steam coming up through the deck as the shuttle moves down the deck, leaving a trail of steam as it goes down the catapult. The motion would last two seconds. The second part would be the steam coming up through the catapult slot for a couple seconds as it vents excess steam. The carrier is usually sailing at about 20 knots into the wind when launching so the steam is always moving from front to back.
Here is a second video which has more scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2vb2neT9hQ -
